FLOODING IN ANINRI LGA: AN URGENT CALL FOR GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION — NAUS Enugu State Axis
Speaking to the reporter @THE VOICE OF THE MASSES MEDIA NEWS , the Chairman of the National Association of University Students (NAUS), Enugu State Axis, Dist. Comr. Ogbonna Anthony O. Cee Wisdom, has called for urgent and coordinated intervention by the Enugu State Government and the Federal Government of Nigeria over the devastating flooding currently affecting parts of Aninri Local Government Area, particularly Okpanku and Mpu communities.
According to him, the flooding has caused significant hardship for residents, with reports of houses being damaged or collapsing and properties worth millions of naira destroyed by floodwaters. Families have been displaced, livelihoods disrupted, and crops and personal belongings lost.
He stressed that the continued flooding poses serious risks to the safety, welfare and dignity of affected residents and requires an immediate humanitarian response.
NAUS therefore calls on the Enugu State Government, through relevant emergency-management and humanitarian agencies, to urgently provide relief materials and other assistance to affected families.
There is an immediate need for temporary shelter, food, clean water, medical assistance and other essential supplies for residents whose homes and livelihoods have been affected.
The association also calls on the Federal Government, through relevant agencies including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other appropriate authorities, to urgently assess the extent of the damage and provide intervention to complement the efforts of the state government.
THE IVO DAM PROJECT MUST BE COMPLETED
Beyond the immediate humanitarian response, NAUS said the recurring flooding underscores the need for sustainable, long-term solutions to the environmental and water-management challenges affecting vulnerable communities.
The association is therefore calling for the current status of the Ivo Dam project to be reviewed, with the Federal Government providing clarity on its status and taking appropriate steps towards addressing the infrastructure and water-management challenges associated with the area.
Government infrastructure should ultimately serve its fundamental purpose of protecting lives, supporting livelihoods and promoting sustainable development. Where critical infrastructure remains incomplete, its status deserves urgent review, particularly where surrounding communities continue to face recurring environmental challenges.
The people of Okpanku, Mpu and other affected communities in Aninri LGA should not be left to bear the consequences of recurring flooding alone.
WE THEREFORE CALL ON THE RELEVANT AUTHORITIES TO:
- Immediately deploy emergency relief and humanitarian assistance to affected communities.
- Conduct a comprehensive assessment of the flood damage and identify affected households.
- Provide temporary shelter and essential supplies to displaced and vulnerable families.
- Provide urgent medical and public-health support to reduce the risk of disease outbreaks.
- Take immediate measures to protect lives and prevent further destruction of homes and property.
- Review the current status of the Ivo Dam project and take concrete steps towards its completion where appropriate.
- Develop a sustainable flood-control and water-management strategy for vulnerable communities in Aninri LGA.
- Ensure that affected communities are adequately consulted and actively involved in long-term flood-mitigation efforts.
The people of Aninri deserve protection, timely intervention and sustainable solutions—not recurring promises after every flood disaster.
This is an urgent humanitarian, environmental and infrastructure matter. NAUS therefore appeals to the Enugu State Government and Federal Government of Nigeria to act swiftly and decisively before the situation becomes even more devastating.
